The Subaru BRZ is due for its first major redesign in 2018. Although reports had floated around about the car’s demise, Automotive News has confirmed that a new version is indeed in the works.
Little is known about the next-generation BRZ. However, it’s a good bet that the car will continue to emphasize sportiness and handling like few cars in its class. After some brief excitement surrounding an attractive concept for a BRZ convertible, hopes for a soft-top variant have reportedly been ruled out by executives. The reason being that such a car would need to grow in size and could lose its sporty character.
Rumors about a much-anticipated turbocharged model have also reportedly been squashed by Subaru. However, enthusiasts can take solace in the expected release of an STI performance model. If the concept that debuted at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show is a good indication, such a car could get a specially-tuned chassis, performance exhaust, and various carbon-fiber aerodynamic enhancements. It’s unclear if we’ll need to wait for the redesign to see our first BRZ STI.
Based on production estimates, the 2018 Subaru BRZ is expected to go on sale in February 2018.
